There
are certain charges we eat as a courtesy when orders get to be a certain
size. They are the cost of doing business. The 30 cents per-transaction fee for processing credit
cards (in addition to 2-3% of the charged amount), the
cost of shipping materials, paper in printing receipts, electricity in
running computers and printers to process the order, and indeed the cost of labor in preparing your
order and shipping it are examples. But when you order, say, one $2.49 set
of sprague-rappaport stethoscope tubing, which carries with it at most 50
cents worth of profit, and NOTHING else, what you are doing is actually
asking us to go out of our way to lose money to serve you.
The customer is always right - until he wants something for less than it
costs us.
So we have implemented a low order fee of a factor of 0.325 times
the difference between your order total and the 10 dollar minimum, rounded
to the nearest penny. So a 9 dollar order means a 33 cent fee, an 8 dollar
order, a 65 cent fee, etcetera.
We feel this gradual slope is the
fairest way to express our costs without creating some strong arbitrary motivation to
order something you don't want (for instance, if there was an all-or-nothing fee of
2.50 that was applied to any order less than 5 dollars, it would be cheaper
for you to place an order for 6 dollars than an order for 4 dollars).
